Laptops Change Curriculum -- And Students

Wow, I would really like to talk to some of the teachers in that building and see how they really feel about all students having a laptop. I would also like to know at what age the students are given their laptops. I thought it was funny that although there were benefits such as making the students more focused and more excited about school, it was like anything else that schools purchase for kids. 1. There will always be students who forget their materials. 2. Teachers don't always know how to implement the technology appropriately. I personally would resist this kind of movement in our school because I feel that the one-on-one interaction between the students and myself and their peers would suffer. This is another one of those situations where I feel technology is being pushed and there's pressure to have it everywhere in your school and it doesn't matter what the cost is. Sometimes moderation is the key.

I'm with you on the technology overkill. I, too, think that teacher/student and student/student contact is more important, especially with the little kiddos. I think it would be nice to have more laptops available in our school, but I don't think every kid needs one. It would be nice to just have some for classroom use like during writing workshop or when the class is working on projects. That's where I see the benefit. I think I would use laptops if I had some in my room, but they would not be abused to the point where the kids were losing out on time with each other and me.

I agree with you about being forced to use laptops. I would also resist it. However, this year in our school, we will be getting new mobile laptop labs. Also every teacher is getting a new laptop or tablet to use. We can't use the desktops anymore. I know of some of the teachers who are resistant to changing, but I hope it will be a good experience. I don't agree with giving each student a laptop to take home. Since I teach SPED, some of my students forget things. They would definitely forget the laptop or leave it somewhere. I think they should just be able to use them at school. If they want to do computer work at home, then they should use their home computer, or go to the library.
